THE STUDIO @ Burlingham Hall will open its doors for the first time on the weekend of 29th and 30th May for a Kiln Fused Glass course (details below). Classes will be small - no more than 10 people - and will be taught by experienced qualified artists and other specialists.
An Introduction to KILN FUSED GLASS
Tutor: Barbara Coulam
Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th May 2010 10 am - 4 pm both days
Course Fee: £180 + min £20 materials charge.
This weekend workshop touches on the history and theory of Kiln Fused Glass but is primarily a practical, experimental introduction to this fantastic art form.
Students will use a variety of materials and techniques to produce items of their choice which may include jewellery, tiles, hanging wall panels and bowls. Clear and coloured glass materials will be available for experimentation and the processes involved in fusing and laminating will be explained and demonstrated by Barbara.
We hope that some small pieces will be fired in our studio overnight so that students can take some of their work away with them at the end of Day 2.
Work done on Day 2 will be fired and despatched by post as soon as possible.
The examples shown here were part of the work done by one novice during a weekend on a similar course in Derbyshire last year.
Barbara began working with glass 6 years ago, having always been fascinated by its magic properties, whilst studying for a Decorative Arts degree at Nottingham Trent University. She specialized in glass early on, experimenting with many techniques and graduated with First Class Honours. She has exhibited at 'New Designers' in the Business Design Centre in London, 'Ambiente' Trade fair in Frankfurt, the Islington Art & Design Fair, and is a regular at the Cambridge Glass Fair.
Barbara now works exclusively with recycled materials, making decorative and practical glassware for domestic use, as well as glass pictures inspired by her watercolours, and jewellery.
Lunch on both days will be home-made & served in our family kitchen (or in fine weather on the terrace) with views over the gardens.

An Introduction to PASTE PAPERS
Tutor: Victoria Hall
Saturday June 5th & Sunday June 6th. 10 am - 4 pm both days
Course Fee: £180 + min £20 materials charge.
A brief illustrated introduction to Decorated Papers followed by a practical session producing a range of Paste papers.
Primarily a practical course - i.e you will make paste papers yourself using materials supplied.
Victoria Hall began making decorated papers professionally in the late 1980's, having attained a degree in the History of Art & Architecture at the University of East Anglia. An acknowledged expert in replicating historic marbled papers used for restoration work she also loves creating unique richly coloured paste papers made by creating patterns in a layer of coloured starch paste applied to a sheet of paper. Both techniques can be attempted by novices to this craft and in her classes at The Studio@ Burlingham Hall, Victoria will demonstrate her work with samples and help participants to experience a variety of techniques and produce a varied portfolio of papers which can then be used in restoration work or other creative projects.
Victoria is a self-taught marbler who has had her own Norwich based business producing traditional papers since 1989. She produces a range of techniques and styles for antiquarian and contemporary applications, supplying clients and collectors worldwide. She has taught at West Dean College in West Sussex since 1995, done numerous workshops for the Society of Bookbinders, and led a series of public events at the John Rylands Library, Manchester.
She is currently marbling papers for the 'Highgrove Florilegium'.
Lunch on both days will be home-made & served in our family kitchen (or in fine weather on the terrace) with views over the gardens.
