NOTE FROM SHEILA: I have known Gloria for many years.
We met through friends only to find she was our son's Art Teacher. With a degree in Fine Art and a passion for ceramics, it was Gloria who first got me excited about Kiln Formed Glass.
She very kindly gifted us a fabulous piece of her work when she visited us a few years back. I was hooked! After 4 years studying Kiln Formed Glass at University of Hertfordshire she is now ready to teach others. Personally, I can't wait. 3 Places have already been reserved.
The Tutor for this course is Gloria MacArthur
The inspiration for my art work is Japanese Art and the landscape that surrounds me.
My glasswork is kiln-fired and often slumped over a mould. It can be functional or decorative, freestanding or wall mounted. Each piece that I make is unique (no two pieces are the same) and this is due to the chemical interaction of glass, metal and minerals in the fusing process and my relentless urge to always create something different and original. I have developed my individual style and skills over the four years that I have studied glass fusing techniques at my local university. My most succesful pieces have come about as a result of experimenting with new materials and combining this with ideas drawn from the natural world.
I am a secondary school Art teacher and I have taught drawing and painting, ceramics, printing, textiles and photography over the last 30 years. I have demonstrated kiln-fired glass techniques to the pupils at my current school over the last three years and many pupils have achieved high GCSE and 'A' level Art results through building up skills in this specialism.
