NOTE FROM SHEILA: With 10 years as a college lecturer under my belt I have successfully established my teaching skills. My long career as a designer hopefully gives me the aesthetic judgement to create appealing objects. Now confident with glass I am passing on my knowledge to others through workshops.
My style of teaching is adaptable and accommodating and I will respond to the needs of the group for this workshop. I am constantly experimenting with materials and techniques and will happily encourage participants to explore their own creative scope.
Students will use a variety of materials and techniques to produce items of their choice which may include jewellery, tiles, hanging wall panels and small bowls.Clear and coloured glass materials will be available for experimentation and the processes involved in fusing and laminating will be explained and demonstrated.
Items made on day one will be fired in our studio kiln overnight so that participants can gain some understanding of the processes involved in firing. Small pieces fired on day one can be taken home on the second day unless they remain for a second firing (e.g. small bowls take two firings, one to fuse and another to 'slump').
All items done on day two will be fired after the workshop but pieces may collected or dispatched by arrangement.
It is usual for work to be ready for collection/despatch within 10 days.
The Tutor for this course is Burlingham Hall owner, Sheila Gates
I began working with glass 2 years ago having been initially inspired by friend and Art Teacher, Gloria MacArthur, and I was subsequently taught by Barbara Coulam at her workshop in Derbyshire. All the images included on this page are made by me and are fairly typical of my range of work to date although I am compelled on a daily basis, through complete enthusiasm for the materials, to experiment with new shapes and designs. Our most recent range of bespoke glass plates and some other commissioned items are featured in more detail on the
new Burlingham Glass website.
The work shown right was done by one novice participant during a recent 2 day workshop. It is typical of the volume of work produced in two days by one person. There is a broad range of materials available and a basic structure to the two days but individual preferences can usually been accommodated.
Students are encouraged to follow their own creativity in producing their work which is always delightful and surprising. Each piece of glass unique.
