An Introduction to BOOKBINDING
Tutor: Judith Ellis
We have no more Bookbinding Workshops planned for 201 but we are keen to respond to demand. If you are interested in this subject please send us an email explaining what you'd like us to include for our 2011 programme and we will try to organise a workshop to suit your needs.

NOTE FROM SHEILA: Judith comes with fantastic credentials: gaining joint first prize in the annual Designer Bookbinders
Competition in 2004 and highly commended in 2007. She also lives locally in Aylsham and since we love to support local artists and craftspeople we are thrilled that she has agreed to run some courses for us. I am certain that she will give us some of the essential basic skills for further creative development.

Single Section Binding This day course will introduce you to the basis for all bookbinding techniques and can be used for the rebinding of existing books as well as making new ones. It will teach you the handling of papers, adhesives and book cloth. You will go home with a booklet that you have sewn together using cartridge paper with a hard cover made of cloth and decorated paper. Materials are included in the price although you are free to bring your own paper if you wish.

Sewn Boards Binding This day course teaches you a method of binding multisection small books using very little adhesive. It was invented by a conservator, Gary Frost, about twenty years ago as a way of rebinding small books with minimum use of invasive techniques and adhesives. It introduces the technique of sewing multiple sections. You will go home with a finished book that has stiff covers covered with cloth and decorated paper. Materials are included in the price although you are free to bring your own paper if you wish.

The Tutor for this course: Judith Ellis began bookbinding by accident after an unexpectedly early cessation of full time work. Her career as a bookbinder has since taken her on a journey from the making of new books to repairing old books, designing and making new bindings, and teaching.
During this journey she has received tuition from Clive Bovill, Mark Cockram, Maureen Duke, Carla Dutta and Christopher Rowlett, all of whom have given of their time and knowledge with great generosity.

Detailed information about Judith Ellis and her work can be found on her website: www.thebookstudio.co.uk

Lunch on both days is included within the price and will be home-made & served in our family kitchen (or in fine weather on the terrace) with views over the gardens.
